Introduction
A thorough knowledge of the BOP and main drilling equipment is vital for safe, efficient and trouble-free drilling. The Hands-on BOP Workshop presents the BOP and main drilling equipment on surface rigs. This highly informative workshop equips candidates with the overall knowledge of drilling equipment, explains the most common deficiencies of BOPs on surface rigs and introduces the basic maintenance procedures with a focus on safe working practice.
Who should attend?
This workshop is aimed at Roughnecks, Derrickmen, (Assistant) Drillers, Toolpushers, Drilling Supervisors, Maintenance Supervisors, Rig Managers, and (Assistant) Mechanics working on land rigs, platform rigs and jack-up rigs.
Aims
Upon completion of the Hands-on BOP Workshop the candidates will be able to:
- Explain and fully understand the working of the main components (ram- and annular-types of BOPs, gate valves, choke and kill manifolds, diverters and control systems)
- Understand the basic requirements from API for the well control equipment.
- Understand the requirements of the maintenance of the well control equipment
-
Perform maintenance on the ram-type BOPs in a safe manner as trained during the practical sessions in the workshop with a surface ram BOP
Workshop contents
Topics covered during this workshop include:
- function, operation, inspection and the most frequent problems of:
- ram and annular preventers
- gate valves
- choke and kill manifolds
- hydraulic control units
- diverter systems
- Coflexip hoses
- analysis of the configuration and testing of the choke and kill manifold
- safe-working procedures and requirements for pressure testing of BOP equipment
-
recognising symptoms which indicate malfunctioning or the necessity of inspection, maintenance or repair of Well Control equipment
Structure
The workshop is based on interactive three days of classroom sessions and half a day of practical assignments.
The practical session provides the candidates with an opportunity to measure cavities and ram blocks, and to inspect several areas of equipment. The classroom (theoretical) sessions are structured to allow group participation and discussion.
The workshop includes videos which explain the operational and maintenance procedures and multiple photographic examples of good and bad work practice. At the end of each course book chapter, there is homework to be completed, which is discussed during the next classroom session.

At the end of the course the candidates receive a USB hand-out stick with additional multi-media training from some of the OEM of the well control equipment.
Qualifications
Upon successful completion of the Hands-on BOP Workshop (Surface Rigs), candidates will receive a ModuSpec Certificate of Completion or, in case of a final exam score below 70%, a ModuSpec Certificate of Attendance.
Duration
Three and half days, including half a day dedicated to hands-on experience.
Educational path
Candidates, who have completed the Hands-on BOP Workshop and would like to extend their knowledge further, are encouraged to attend other ModuSpec courses and training programmes.
