Well Control - Introductory

WELL CONTROL EQUIPMENT COURSE (WCEC) FOR SURFACE RIGS

Introduction

The Well Control Equipment Course has been specially developed for drilling personnel who wish to gain basic overall skills in well control on surface drilling rigs. This course can be considered as an introduction to the ModuSpec Academy Well Control educational curriculum.

Who should attend?

This course is intended for personnel involved in drilling operations and working with well control equipment on land rigs, platform rigs and jack-up rigs who want to improve their knowledge. It is recommended in particular to:

  • Drilling Supervisors
  • Drilling Engineers
  • Drilling Managers
  • Toolpushers
  • Maintenance Supervisors
  • (Assistant) Drillers
  • (Assistant) Mechanics

Aims

Upon completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

  • Explain the working of the main components of well control equipment (ram-type and annular-type BOPs, gate valves, choke and kill manifold, etc.), hydraulic control systems and diverter systems
  • Explain the implication of standards (API, ASME, etc.) on maintenance, inspection and testing (function and pressure testing) of well control equipment

Course Content

The topics covered during this course include:

  • The function, operation, inspection and the most frequent problems of
    • ram preventers and locking systems
    • annular preventers
    • gate valves
    • choke and kill manifolds
    • hydraulic control units
    • diverter systems
    • Coflexip hoses and ring gaskets
  • Norms and standards used in the drilling industry (such as API) and their implication for well control equipment
  • Analysis of the configuration and testing of choke and kill manifold
  • Safe-working procedures and requirements for pressure testing of the BOP equipment
  • Recognizing symptoms that indicate malfunctioning and the necessity of inspection, maintenance or repair of well control equipment

Structure

This 5-day course is based on a series of interactive classes with adequate time for group participation and discussion.  It also includes:

  • Videos to explain operational and maintenance procedures
  • An entry test to evaluate the knowledge of the candidate prior to the start of the classroom sessions
  • A final exam at the end of the course, with the minimum passing score of 70%
