Mechanical - Introductory

RIG MECHANICAL COURSE (RMC)

Introduction

The introductory level Rig Mechanical Course (RMC) forms part of the tri-level educational curriculum of the ModuSpec Academy (Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced levels) which is specifically aimed at the drilling industry. The RMC provides a solid basis for candidates who aspire to becoming a Rig Mechanic.

The only prerequisite to join the course is that a candidate is currently employed on a drilling rig.

Who should attend?

This introductory course is specifically aimed at maintenance staff of drilling departments. It is  particularly recommended for:

  • Drilling and well service personnel who intend to acquire basic knowledge of rig equipment
  • New employees who have little or no knowledge of a drilling rig
  • Maintenance personnel who want to broaden their knowledge
  • (Assistant) Mechanics
  • Motormen
  • Deck crew moving over to the maintenance department
  • Any maintenance staff changing from one type of drilling unit (land rig, platform rig, jack up rig, tender rig or barge) to another

Objectives

Upon completion of the course the candidate will be able to:

  • Carry out a basic (visual) rig inspection
  • Identify major items which have an impact on safety and the operation of a rig
  • Describe the major inspection criteria used for the main equipment (drawworks, top drive/rotary, mud pumps, well control equipment, main engines) and safety
  • Recognise indicators of the overall condition and deficiencies of a drilling rig
  • Perform a range of planned maintenance tasks
  • Explain the functioning, at a safety and elementary level, of mechanical equipment such as engines, compressors, tuggers, hydraulic systems, etc.
  • List the standards (such as API) used in the drilling industry and the implications thereof for drilling equipment
  • Evaluate and interpret all kinds of certificates (OEM, NDT, etc.)
  • List the most common well control equipment deficiencies found on surface BOP equipment
  • Explain the working of eddy current brake (Elmagco brake)

Course content

ModuSpec's Rig Mechanical Course provides an insight into the most common deficiencies found on drilling units. It contains detailed examples concerning the major drilling equipment, such as the drawworks, top drive, mud pumps, derrick, mud systems, well control equipment, marine cranes, engines, safety equipment and pollution control standards.

The Rig Mechanical Course presents the fundamental industry standard and generic maintenance procedures, explains the requirements of a maintenance system and introduces the basic maintenance reporting standards.

Structure

The course is based on interactive classes with adequate time for group participation and discussion.

To ensure clarity and maximum effectiveness of the course:

  • Photographs of defective equipment from ModuSpec's Technical Inspection Database are used to visualise specific deficiencies
  • Videos are shown to explain operational and maintenance procedures
  • The course ends with an exam to evaluate the candidate's knowledge and progress
