RIG MECHANIC PROGRAMME (RMP)

Introduction

The intermediate level Rig Mechanic Programme (RMP) forms a part of the tri-level educational curriculum of the ModuSpec Academy (Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced levels) and is specifically directed at maintenance staff working in the drilling industry. It is the next step for candidates who have completed the introductory Rig Mechanical Course (RMC) and all persons interested in further specialising as Mechanics in drilling departments.

Who should attend?

This course has been developed for maintenance staff among drilling and well service personnel and it is aimed at:

  •  Motormen who are candidates for promotion
  •  New employees who have successfully completed their probationary period
  •  Apprenticeship personnel in a mechanical or marine engineering discipline
  •  Mechanics in heavy industry sectors
  •  Mining and marine industry personnel
  •  Defence force personnel with a trade background
  •  Candidates who have completed ModuSpec's Rig Equipment Course

Objectives

The aims of this programme are to:

  • Expose trainees to various types of equipment, operating procedures, compliance regulations, maintenance tasks and general rig operations
  • Ensure a smooth transition into the drilling industry, in order to fulfil the role of a Rig Mechanic
  • Ensure that Rig Mechanics are familiar with the components, safe operation and maintenance of systems on a drilling rig
  • Expose the fundamental components of both land and offshore drilling rigs; through the use of field-based exercises and assessments the trainees are challenged to apply new skills in relation to the identification, location, layout and functioning of rig equipment
  • Use planned maintenance procedures to ensure that maintenance is carried out to the standard expected in the contemporary drilling industry and that applicable systems are understood

Programme Content

The syllabus entails an extensive overview of the majority of equipment configuration associated with drilling units and ongoing learning is a key component of the programme.

Structure

The programme consists of both theoretical and practical components, divided into two 5-day sessions. Between the two sessions the trainees are required to complete tasks and assignments. Exams are taken at the end of each session to assess the candidates' competence and areas for further development are identified.
